Govt to register fresh constitution amendment proposal on Tuesday

Kathmandu, April 10

Nepal’s government has decided to withdraw a constitution amendment proposal it presented before Parliament last year, and to present a fresh one on Tuesday.

A meeting of the Cabinet decided to register a fresh amendment by removing the proposal to re-draw the boundary of Province 4. The bill was under consideration of Parliament, but had been facing tough resistance from the main opposition party, the UML.

The government has decided to resolve all boundary-related disputes by forming a commission.

The new proposal retains draft changes to the constitution on issues related to language, nationality and the formation of the National Assembly. The new proposal removes the chiefs and vice-chiefs of local bodies from the electoral college to elect the national assembly. Similarly, Article 274 of the constitution, which prescribes the procedure to re-draw provincial boundaries is also being altered.
