More than 21,000 road accidents have occurred in Madhesh Province over the past five years, resulting in the deaths of 2,748 people, according to official statistics.

Data released by the Madhesh Province Police Office show that a total of 21,989 road accidents involving 42,637 vehicles were recorded between the fiscal years 2020/21 and 2024/25.

The statistics indicate that 2,748 people lost their lives in these accidents. In addition, 10,866 people sustained serious injuries, while 36,442 suffered minor injuries.

District-wise data show that Dhanusha recorded the highest number of accidents. A total of 4,868 accidents occurred in the district during the five-year period, claiming 428 lives and leaving 2,943 people seriously injured.

Bara ranked second in terms of accident numbers, with 4,468 accidents resulting in 416 deaths and 781 serious injuries. Sarlahi recorded 4,072 accidents, 336 deaths, and 2,132 serious injuries.

In Siraha, 3,526 accidents led to 379 deaths and 1,778 serious injuries. Saptari reported 3,720 accidents, 383 deaths, and 1,208 serious injuries.

Similarly, Rautahat recorded 3,403 accidents, causing 300 deaths and 769 serious injuries, while Mahottari saw 3,091 accidents, resulting in 298 deaths and 890 serious injuries.

The lowest number of accidents during the period was recorded in Parsa, where 2,035 accidents claimed 208 lives and left 365 people seriously injured.

Madhesh Province DIG Om Adhikari said preventing road accidents remains challenging due to the province’s large population, extensive road network, and high number of vehicles.

He said accident rates could be reduced through coordinated traffic management efforts and public awareness programs involving all stakeholders. Adhikari also noted that the concerns of traffic police have not been adequately reflected in policymaking and budget allocations, urging the state to address these issues.
