Veteran communist leader Barman Budha no more

Veteran communist leader Barman Budha has died, in Lalitpur on Wednesday. He was 90.

Budha, a native of Thawang in Rolpa, was undergoing treatment against intestine cancer at Patan Hospital. He was suffering from the disease for the past year.

Budha was elected the House of Representatives member on behalf of the then Samyukta Janamorcha in the 1991 parliamentary elections. When the Maoists started the armed struggle against the state in 1996, Budha also joined the party.

According to people aware of his struggle, Budha was jailed in his youth for protesting injustices of local community leaders. In the jail of Pyuthan, he met senior communist leader Mohan Bikram Singh, who influenced him to join the communist party.

Meanwhile, the ruling Nepal Communist Party Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal has expressed his condolences over the death of Budha.
