Upendra Yadav quits govt after constitution amendment bid failed

Upendra Yadav briefs media after a meeting with left parties, in Baluwatar, on Thursday, March 1, 2018.

Kathmandu, December 24

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Upendra Yadav submitted his resignation from the position after he failed to convince Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli to endorse his proposal on forming a panel to prepare a constitution amendment proposal.

A day after Oli stopped him from presenting the proposal during the Cabinet meeting, Yadav tendered his resignation. Earlier, a meeting of his Samajwadi Party’s top leaders had decided to leave the government.

Consequently, Minister for Urban Development Mohammad Istiyak Rai also resigned.

Yadav’s the then Federal Socialist Party had joined the government after an agreement with Nepal Communist Party chairs Oli and Pushpa Kamal Dahal on May 28, 2018. During the agreement, the two leaders had agreed to register the constitution amendment proposal in Parliament after needful discussions. However, the issue was never on Oli’s agenda.

Yadav, in his resignation, wrote today that Oli’s dismissal of his proposal about the amendment yesterday was evident that the government withdrew from the two-point agreement.

Though Oli’s rejection of the proposal became an immediate reason for Yadav’s resignation, the growing differences between the two leaders were clear since a few weeks back. When Oli reshuffled his  Cabinet last month, he changed Yadav’s portfolio without consulting him. It was reported that Oli wanted to remove both Yadav and Rai from the government, but Dahal saved their positions.

Though humiliated, Yadav had decided to continue the ministership, saying he would make fresh bids for the constitution amendment.
