Kathmandu, August 29

The Election Commission says provincial and local-level elected officials in the CPN-UML and the Janata Samajbadi Party Nepal should make a choice between these old parties and newly formed the CPN-Unified Socialist and the Loktantrik Samajbadi Party respectively by September 7.

Thanks to an ordinance issued by the Sher Bahadur Deuba-led government that eased the requirements for a party split, the parties had split last week.

Following that, the commission decided to call provincial and local officials on Sunday to choose their parties by the deadline as per the ordinance.

The federal lawmakers do not need to choose the parties as they were required to present their signatures before the commission approved the split.
