Election Commission plans to move towards internet voting

Election Commission building

Kathmandu, October 6

Chief Election Commissioner Man Bahadur Karki said the Election Commission would move towards introducing internet-based electronic voting in the coming days.

The Election Commission organised a presentation, technology demonstration and interaction programme on internet voting technology and the use of information and communication technology in election management on Tuesday.

Addressing the programme, Karki expressed his commitment to moving ahead with internet voting.

He said technological preparations, institutional capacity building, cybersecurity and effective coordination among relevant agencies would be necessary to implement an internet voting system.

Election Commissioner Dr Rajib Subba said it would be necessary to map the ICT-related knowledge, skills, human resources and technical capacity available not only at the Election Commission but also across various government agencies when implementing an internet voting system.

He said the system would be multidimensional and involve multiple agencies, making it necessary to identify expertise and skills available within relevant government bodies in areas including digital identity, voter authentication, data exchange, cybersecurity, system development, infrastructure and operations.

He said identifying and utilising the technical human resources, expertise and institutional capacity required to move towards implementing an internet voting system would provide a basis for its implementation.
