Biratnagar, January 20

Coinciding with Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli’s planned trip to Rangeli of Morang district, United Democratic Madheshi Front has called a two-day general strike, affecting life in the district.

The UDMF called the strike from Wednesday after it came to know that Prime Minister Oli is visiting Rangeli on Thursday to take part in a constitution awareness campaign that Youth Association Nepal was organising.

Since Wednesday morning, UDMF activists have been staging Morang district’s old headquarters, Rangeli. The cadres have imposed a ban on vehicular movement, not even letting motorcycles ply. Markets too have shut in response to the call, affecting life in Rangeli.

Rangeli-PradarshanYAN plans to organise a gathering on Thursday as part of the campaign on an open ground close to Nepal Bank Limited office. The UDMF has announced that it will organise its gathering close to the Durga Temple in Rangeli.

At this stage, it’s unclear whether PM Oli will visit Morang, the PM’s Secretariat said.

Local people fear that programmes of rival parties in the same area may cause unfortunate incidents. Pramod Kharel, deputy superintendent of police, said they have stepped up security to avert clashes between YAN and UDMF cadres.
