Supreme Court rejects writ against NRN participation at NC general convention

Kathmandu, March 2

The Supreme Court has rejected a writ petition seeking an order to bar Non-Resident Nepali representatives, who have already relinquished Nepali citizenship, from taking part in the Nepali Congress’ 13th general convention.

Representatives from Europe, America and other parts of the world are taking part in the Congress conclave.

In his writ, Dhruba Gautam from Pyuthan pointed that NRN representatives, who have already given up Nepali citizenship, should not be allowed to take part in the convention. The court quashed the petition.

Later, however, lawyer Ram Krishna Kafle filed a similar writ.

Gautam, organising a press conference at the Reporters’ Club, accused political parties of making Non-Resident Nepalis, who have already given up Nepali citizenship, representatives, in the hope of getting donations from them. He pointed that this practice will harm the country.

If we do not stop this practice immediately, Indian nationals living close to the border will easily establish themselves as GC representatives, thereby consigning Nepal’s political parties to history.

At the press meet, advocate Kafle claimed that this practice is against Articles 4, 14, 17, 48 and 269 of Nepal’s constitution. Based on this, I have filed a writ against this practice at the Supreme Court, he said.
