Sony Xperia 5 V: Is the premium price tag justified?

Sony has unveiled its compact flagship smartphone; the Sony Xperia 5 V. It is the successor of last year’s Sony Xperia 5 IV. There are a few changes, the most significant being the replacement of the rear camera system. The 5 IV had a triple camera setup whereas the 5 V now has a dual camera system.

The Sony Xperia 5 V is a compact and powerful smartphone and shares many things with its older brother the Sony Xperia 1 V. Even though it is a nice phone sharing flagship components, the high price might be a factor for many. Let us see what the smartphone offers.

Design and display

The Sony Xperia 5 V has a simple and similar design to the Sony Xperia 1 V. Like the 1 V, it has a tall and narrow form factor but is smaller in size. The edges are slightly curved. The back is made up strong of Corning Gorilla Glass Victus 2. The frame is made up of aluminium and has a smooth matte texture. On the front, the side bezels are thin whereas the top and the chin are a bit thicker. The bezel on the top also houses the selfie camera.

The Sony Xperia 5 V has a 6.1-inch screen and an 83% screen-to-body ratio. The type is an OLED display with a 1 billion colour palette. It has a smooth 120Hz refresh rate and supports HDR10 and BT.2020 for enhanced colour and contrast. The resolution of 1,080 x 2,520 pixels in a 21:9 ratio results in sharp and crisp images at approximately 449 pixels per inch. Plus, it’s protected by Corning Gorilla Glass Victus 2 and also has IP65/IP69 dust and water resistance.

Performance

The Sony Xperia 5 V is powered by the latest flagship Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset, built on a 4nm process. Its octa-core CPU configuration includes one powerful 3.2 GHz Cortex-X3 core, two 2.8 GHz Cortex-A715 cores, two 2.8 GHz Cortex-A710 cores, and three 2.0 GHz Cortex-A510 cores for versatile performance. Graphics are handled by the Adreno 740 GPU. The phone runs on the Android 13 operating system.

The smartphone now features improved thermal management with a 40% increase in heat diffusion sheet volume, ensuring it remains cool even during extended periods of intense use.

It is available in one RAM option of 8 GB paired with two storage options: 128 GB or 256 GB. It also has a dedicated microSDXC slot supporting up to 1 TB of external storage.

Camera

The Sony Xperia 5 V boasts an impressive camera system for both photography and videography enthusiasts. At the rear, the primary camera offers a flexible shooting experience with a resolution of 52 MP (Full aspect) or 48 MP (Effective), supported by a substantial 1/1.35″ Exmor T for mobile sensor.

It combines pixel binning technology at 12 MP for superior image quality in varying lighting conditions and 48 MP for detailed shots. The dual aperture at F1.9 and two focal lengths, 24 mm and 48 mm, allow for creative versatility. With a wide field of view at 84°, this camera captures expansive scenes with ease.

In addition to these features, the Xperia 5 V’s camera is loaded with advanced functionality. It includes real-time eye AF for both humans and animals, real-time tracking, and Optical SteadyShot™ with FlawlessEye™ for steady photos and videos. Other features include support for HDR (High Dynamic Range) photography, night shooting functions, AI super resolution zoom, and various creative look presets.

For videos, it can record 4K HDR videos at frame rates of 24, 25, 30, 60, and 120 fps and 1,080p videos at frame rates of 30,60 and 120fps. Object tracking and Eye AF enhance video recording, and the inclusion of S-Cinetone for mobile and product showcase settings ensures professional-quality video content.

For selfies and videos, the Xperia 5 V includes a 12 MP front camera with a 1/2.9” Exmor RS mobile sensor. It has features like HDR (High Dynamic Range) photography, display flash, hand shutter, and creative look options. It can record 4K videos at 30fps and 1,080p videos at 30 and 60fps with 5-axis gyro-EIS support for stability.

Battery and others

The Sony Xperia 5 V has a Li-Po 5,000 mAh battery. Charging is efficient with 30W wired charging, and it supports wireless charging as well as reverse wireless charging. It supports Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac/6e across tri-band frequencies, ensuring fast and reliable wireless connections. Bluetooth 5.3 is available for pairing with compatible devices.

Audio is delivered through stereo speakers and includes a 3.5mm headphone jack for traditional wired audio options. In terms of sensors, it features a side-mounted fingerprint sensor for convenient and secure unlocking.

Other sensors include an accelerometer, gyro, proximity sensor, barometer, compass, and colour spectrum sensor. Notably, it also offers native support for Sony Alpha cameras, enhancing the integration with Sony’s camera ecosystem.

The Sony Xperia 5 V is expected to be priced at Rs 138,000 for the 8GB/128GB variant and Rs 142,000 for the 8GB/256GB variant in Nepal.
