Sony has released its flagship camera-centric smartphone this year, Sony Xperia 1 V. It is the successor of last year’s Sony Xperia 1 IV.

Design and display

Sony Xperia 1 V is similar in design to the previous year’s Sony Xperia 1 IV and continues the signature squared-off, tall and narrow design. The back is a Corning Gorilla Glass Victus with a fine textured grip. The aluminium frame on the sides has a ribbed texture, which looks funky.

On the back, there is a triple camera setup with a similar design to the Xperia 1 V. The rear camera setup also includes a mic that is more directional and captures the sound when zoomed into a subject. The camera also has a dedicated two-step shutter button for easier camera operations.

The display on the front uses OLED with a resolution of 3840X1644 pixels and a 21:9 aspect ratio with a high pixel density of 643 pixels per inch. Additionally, Sony Xperia 1 V supports a smooth and responsive 120Hz refresh rate while HDR support with BT.2020 colour gamut enhances the visual experience.

Sony Xperia 1 V is equipped with IP65 and IP68 certifications, indicating its water and dust resistance capabilities. With this, it is safe against low-pressure water jet spray and can withstand immersion in water at depths exceeding 1 metre without being negatively affected.

Performance

It is powered by the Snapdragon® 8 Gen2 Mobile Platform, the latest from Qualcomm, which offers excellent performance and efficiency. The CPU configuration consists of an octa-core setup, including a Cortex-X3 core clocked at 3.2 GHz, two Cortex-A715 cores and two Cortex-A710 cores running at 2.8 GHz, as well as three Cortex-A510 cores operating at 2.0 GHz. For graphics processing, Sony Xperia 1 V utilises the Adreno 740 GPU and runs on Andriod 13 operating system.

Sony Xperia 1 V has one RAM option of 12GB, which is paired with one storage option of 256GB. Users can also extend the storage using a MicroSD card of up to 1TB.

Camera

Sony’s flagships are all about their camera. Sony Xperia 1 V has a triple-camera setup on the back, which includes a 52MP Sony ExmorT IMX 888 sensor. The sensor is a big improvement, which uses a stacked CMOS sensor with 2-layer transistor pixel technology. The remaining two cameras include a 12MP telephoto camera and a 12MP ultra-wide camera.

Sony Xperia 1 V includes a lot of features, which excite camera enthusiasts. It has Photography Pro mode, with which you can access manual controls and settings for precise adjustments. The ZEISS quality lenses ensure exceptional image quality while the ZEISS coating reduces reflections and flare. The camera’s 120 fps readout speed captures fast-moving subjects with clarity, and the up to 30 fps AF/AE burst allows you to capture fast action moments accurately.

Sony Xperia 1 V also has continuous AF/AE calculation up to 60 times per second, ensuring continuous focus and exposure accuracy. With 3-ConeTone, you have professional colour-grading options for a cinematic look. Sony Xperia 1 V also includes the product showcase setting for optimised focus on products and Video Pro Jive streaming for seamless live streaming. Additionally, the device supports external monitor live streaming, providing a larger display and enhanced monitoring capabilities.

Sony Xperia 1 V offers three distinct camera apps: Photo Pro, Video Pro, and Cinema Pro. In Photo Pro, the default camera app, you have access to features such as night view for improved low-light photography, manual controls for white balance and exposure compensation, bokeh mode, and various shooting settings conveniently placed next to the shutter release.

The pro mode within Photo Pro provides advanced options like the program, shutter priority, and manual modes, along with the ability to store pre-set settings.

Video Pro allows for granular exposure controls, additional frame rates, and live streaming on YouTube, offering direct uploads without the need for post-processing. The interface features a large viewfinder, controls for focus and zoom, and separate buttons for accessing shooting parameters and settings.

Cinema Pro in Sony Xperia 1 V unlocks a wide range of frame rates and resolutions, including 4K up to 120fps, with comprehensive control over shutter speed, ISO, white balance, and colour profiles. Sony Xperia 1 V also introduces features like rack focus and focus peaking. Overall, these three apps cater to different photography and videography needs, providing users with flexibility and creative control for capturing professional-quality content.
