Rights activists detained for demonstrating outside Parliament

Kathmandu, July 16

Police in Kathmandu have arrested over 20 human rights activists while they were staging a demonstration outside the Parliament building in Naya Baneshwor.

Human Rights and Peace Society, a leading human rights organisation of the country, had organised the demonstration protesting various government decisions that according to it targeted people’s basic human rights.

As the protesters chanted slogans against the government demanding that it take efforts to protect and promote people’s human rights, police intervened in the situation and detained them.

Those taken into control include the organisation’s founder Krishna Pahadi, president Ganga Dhar Adhikari, Hom Kanta Chaulagain, Krishna Kandel, Renuka Paudel, Uttam Pudasaini, Bal Bahadur Gaha Magar, Batu Krishna Dhungel, Gita Timalsina, Babu Haru Acharya, and Ram Krishna Baral.

They have been kept at the Metropolitan Police Circle, Naya Baneshwor.

Earlier few days ago, the organisation had organised a protest in front of Singhadarbar and the Prime Minister’s residence in Baluwatar, and its members were arrested then too. They were released after few hours.
