Rape and murder suspect, absconding from Ramechhap, nabbed from India after 5 years

Kathmandu, June 26

A rape and murder suspect of Ramechhap district, once arrested but shortly released and absconding since then, has been arrested from the Andaman and Nicobar Islands of India, Nepal Police said on Monday.

Shyam Raut from Poku of the district was arrested in coordination with the Indian Police recently. The Indian Police handed him over to Nepal Police in Bhairahawa yesterday, according to DIG Ganesh KC, Chief of the Central Regional Police Office.

Raut is accused of raping and murdering Suntali Tamang (14) from Saipu Sisandhu of Likhu in the district.

The teen had gone missing on January 19, 2012 and her body was found in a local stream after 15 days.

Following the discovery, the victim’s mother Dilli Maya had filed an FIR at the District Police Office naming Shyam Raut and Pradeep Raut as guilty.

At first, police had refused to investigate the case, but the file was opened after few years.

Meanwhile, DIG KC at the press conference in Kathmandu today also assured that a departmental action would be taken against the then DSP Sanjeev Sharma, who refused to carry out an investigation into the case.
