Provincial police row: Federal govt ready to pass ordinance, says secretary Rai

Kathmandu, October 24

The federal government is ready to issue an ordinance related to the formation of federal police, a senior official has hinted.

Home Ministry Secretary Prem Rai, in an interview with Onlinekhabar, said that the government is ready to pass the ordinance to resolve the situation in Province 2.

Rai’s comments come a day after NCP Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal and Province 2 Chief Minister Lal Babu Raut engaged in a verbal duel  over Province 2’s decision to pass legislation to setup a provincial police force.

“If the provincial government is in trouble just because of the issue, we are ready to issue an ordinance,” said Rai. “As Parliament is not in session, the government can issue an order to help the provinces setup their police force,” he added.

Asked if the ministry has objections over any of the provisions of the law prepared by Province 2, Rai said that the law should abide by the constitution.
