Province 5 likely to be named Lumbini

Provincial Assembly hall of Province 5 in Butwal

Butwal, December 16

The Province 5 Assembly is likely to endorse a proposal to rename the province as Lumbini. A committee formed by the legislative body to suggest its name and capital reached a conclusion to propose Lumbini as the province’s new name.

The committee, however, failed to forge an agreement about the capital. Therefore, it is proposing Sainamaina of Rupandehi, Buddhabhumi of Kaliplbastu and Lamahi-Bhalubang of Dang as options for the provincial capital. Butwal of Rupandehi district is the current capital of the province, but it was fixed by the federal government for the time till the Provincial Assembly makes a decision.

It has already been four years since the federal constitution’s implementation, but so far only three of seven provinces have been named and their capitals fixed. If Province 5 endorses the proposal soon, it will be the fourth province to have a name.

Lawmaker Dipendra Kumar Pun ‘Sijal’, who heads the recommendation committee, says the name and the capital are being proposed based on suggestions collected from all districts of the province.
