Province 5 capital row: Nepali Congress to vote against Dang

Provincial Assembly hall of Province 5 in Butwal

Butwal, October 6

The main opposition Nepali Congress has issued a whip to its members in the Province 5 Assembly, directing them to vote against the government proposal to establish the provincial capital in Bhalubang of Dang.

“We have decided to vote against the proposal about shifting the capital to Dang,” the provincial parliamentary party’s leader Birendra Kumar Kanaudiya says, “However, we do not have any disagreement to the proposal on renaming the province as Lumbini.”

The assembly is scheduled to decide the name and the capital this afternoon through voting. Amid a violent protest of the opposition lawmakers, Provincial Internal Affairs and Law Minister Kul Prasad KC had issued the proposal on Monday afternoon.

Despite the opposition’s objection, the proposal is highly likely to get endorsed as the ruling Nepal Communist Party has 61 lawmakers, three more than the requirement for endorsing the proposal.

Meanwhile, the central disciplinary committee of the party has said it would take action against the lawmakers involved in vandalism in the assembly hall yesterday.
