Kathmandu, October 5

After some members of his own Nepal Communist Party have objected to the provincial government’s decision to propose Bhalubang of Dang as the capital of Province 5, Chief Minister Shankar Pokhrel has assured he would develop Butwal as the financial capital of the province.

Currently, Butwal has been serving as the temporary provincial capital and there are demands that the capital should be retained. Pokhrel, a native of Dang, however, has been lobbying for establishing the capital in his home district.

During the provincial parliamentary party meeting in Butwal on Monday, lawmakers including Physical Infrastructure Minister Baijanath Chaudhary demanded that the government do something to address the demand of locals in Butwal. In response, the chief minister said Butwal would function as the financial and tourism capital of the province.

He also added the government would operate from Butwal unless physical infrastructures would be ready in Bhaluwang.

“It has given some relief to the people of Butwal and us also,” NCP Chief Whip Bhumishwar Dhakal says, adding the meeting has issued a whip to the lawmakers to vote in favour of the government proposal.
