Province 3 Assembly to elect Speaker on Feb 10; UML’s Poudel likely to win

Hetaunda, February 1

Parties represented in the Provincial Assembly of Province 3 have decided to hold an election for the Assembly’s Speaker on February 10. The Deputy Speaker will be elected the next day.

A meeting of all parties represented in the Assembly held in Hetaunda before the first meeting of the Assembly made the decision. Now, the Assembly meeting, which has begun at 1 pm, will endorse the decision.

It is very likely that CPN-UML’s Dor Mani Poudel, who is heading the provincial legislature as the senior-most lawmaker, will be elected the Speaker as his party holds the majority whereas the CPN-Maoist Centre will also support the party. No one except Poudel has claimed the position among UML lawmakers.

As per an agreement made between the two parties, the UML will support the Maoist Centre for the Deputy Speaker. A woman has to be elected the Deputy Speaker as the constitution says the two key positions should be shared between different genders.
