Probe commission taking in complaints on conflict-era disappearances

Commission-of-Investigation-on-Enforced-Disappeared-Persons

Kathmandu, April 14

The Inquiry Commission on Disappearances is taking in complaints regarding disappearances that occurred during the decade-long insurgency from Thursday.

The commission will accept complaints through peace committees throughout the country. The victims’ side can also lodge complaints directly at the commission.

Professor Dr Bishnu Pathak, commission Spokesperson, told Onlinekhabar that the commission has given a 60-day timeframe for lodging complaints.

The commission will start studying the cases once peace committees forward the complaints to it. After studying the complaints, teams from the commission will visit the disappeared’s households for further study.

It has appealed the victims’ side to lodge complaints without fear. The commission will ascertain the number of people disappeared during the decade-long conflict on the basis of complaints received.

The Truth and Reconciliation Commission is also preparing to receive complaints within a few days.

TRC will look into killings, injuries, abductions and other grave human rights violations, whereas the commission on disappearances will prepare a list of disappeared individuals and receive complaints, investigate them and make the findings public.

It will also recommend action against the guilty, provide compensation to the victims and make recommendations on medical treatment that the victims require.
