Prachanda government ready to entrust India with reconstruction of parts of Pashupatinath Area

The Prachanda government is preparing to let India reconstruct part of the Pashupatinath Area, save the core area, including the Pashupatinath Temple. Nepali officials have they are preparing to reach an understanding between Nepal and India on the reconstruction work during PM Prachanda’s upcoming visit to India.

Despite India’s interest in reconstruction of the area, Nepal wants to rebuild the core area, including the temple, on its own. Minister for Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation, Jivan Bahadur Shahi, told Onlinekhabar: My stress is that Nepal should rebuild the core area, including the Pashupatinath Temple, on its own.

The government is preparing to entrust India with the reconstruction of other sections. During his visit to Nepal two years ago, India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi had pledged to donate INR 250 million for the Pashupatinath Area. The pledge aside, Nepal is yet to get the money, though this amount will not be enough to carry out reconstruction work in the area.

According to an estimate, it will take around two billion rupees to carry out reconstruction work in the Pashupatinath Area, save the core area  

Pashupati Area Development Trust estimates that it will take around two billion rupees to carry out reconstruction work in the Pashupatinath Area, save the core area. Nepali officials say the Indian side is positive about reconstruction of this part.

According to a source at the National Reconstruction Authority, Nepal’s Ministry of Tourism is positive about entrusting India with the reconstruction of 23 temples and Gumbas.
