PM Oli directs universities to promote research

Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli addresses the eighth general meeting of Mid-Western University, in Kathmandu, on Sunday, August 26, 2018.

Kathmandu, August 26

Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli says universities should not restrict themselves in facilitating teaching learning activities, but they should promote research on various issues so as to support overall development of the country.

Oli, who is chancellor of all universities of the country by the virtue of his position, says research is a must for the universities to get recognised as academic institutions.

Addressing the eighth general meeting of Surkhet-based Mid-Western University at his own residence in Baluwatar of Kathmandu today, Oli said, “The universities should be developed as academic centres. More research should be conducted there than teaching learning activities.”

On the occasion, Oli said the government was preparing to identify which sectors would require more human resources in the country and establish universities and colleges accordingly.

He added that the government was more concerned about the quality of university education than the number of institutions.
