Republic Day was celebrated across the country today with various programs. In Kathmandu, the government marked the occasion with a formal ceremony at Tundikhel.
The day commemorates May 28, 2008, when the first democratically elected Constituent Assembly officially ended the autocratic monarchy and declared Nepal a Federal Democratic Republic.

Earlier in the morning, ahead of the event at Tundikhel, the Nepali Army fired a cannon salute to mark Republic Day. Following that, the formal program began at the Military Pavilion at 8:00 AM.
The ceremony at Tundikhel was attended by President Ram Chandra Paudel, Prime Minister Balendra Shah (Balen), and other dignitaries. President Paudel addressed the gathering. However, Prime Minister Balen did not deliver a speech.

Prior to the program, security personnel performed a ceremonial march past (parade).
