Nepal is celebrating Republic Day today, marking the historic declaration of the federal democratic republican system on Jestha 15, 2065 BS (May 28, 2008), which formally ended the autocratic monarchy.
The government held a special ceremony at Tundikhel in Kathmandu to commemorate the occasion. The event featured a flower drop by army helicopters and a parade by security personnel. As in previous years, doves—symbols of peace—were also released during the celebration.
President Ramchandra Paudel, Vice President Ram Sahaya Prasad Yadav, Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli, and other high-ranking officials from constitutional bodies were present at the event.
Republic Day is not only being celebrated in Nepal, but also by Nepalis living abroad, who are organising various programs to honour the day.
Each year on Jestha 15, the nation observes Republic Day in remembrance of the momentous transition to a republican system of governance.
