Parsa officials withdraw order to shoot at Covid-19 patients if they run away

Parsa District Administration Office

Kathmandu, May 16

After protests from human rights activists and the public, officials in Parsa, the district with the highest number of Covid-19 cases in the country, have withdrawn an order given to the police personnel in the district to shoot at Covid-19 patients if they try to run away from isolation wards where they are kept for treatment.

Whereas a meeting of the District Emergency Management Committee led by Chief District Officer Bishnu Kumar Karki made the decision on Friday, the officials hurried to correct the decision in the evening.

The district’s Assistant Chief District Officer Lalit Kumar Basnet says, “The public interpreted our decision differently, hence, we have now ordered the officials to take action as per the Local Administration Act.”

However, another official still claims, “After all, our decision was made for the people.”
