Kathmandu, June 1

The main opposition CPN-UML on Thursday obstructed the Parliament meeting demanding immediate resumption of vote counting in Bharatpur Metropolitan City of Chitwan district.

Following the obstruction, Speaker Onsari Gharti Magar announced that the next meeting would take place at 11 am on Sunday.

As soon as the Speaker announced commencement of the meeting, the UML lawmakers stood up from their seats. They did not heed the Speaker’s call for take the seats and help her resume the meeting.

The Speaker waited for around five minutes to announce the adjournment.

Some Maoist cadres had reportedly torn the ballot papers in Bharatpur on Sunday midnight, resulting in an indefinite halt in the counting.

The opposition party has been claiming that ruling Nepali Congress and CPN-Maoist Centre were involved in the incident and they created the disturbance after fearing their loss.

The Congress-Maoist alliance and the UML were neck and neck in the mayoral competition before the voting was halted.

The UML had obstructed the House meeting yesterday as well.

The continuous obstruction will affect the schedule of electing the new Prime Minister as called by the President.
