Opposition accuses envoy Upadhyay of soliciting votes for Nepali Congress, going against code

Centre: Nepal’s Ambassador to India, Deep Kumar Upadhyay

Kapilbastu, June 25

Opposition parties including the CPN-UML have accused Nepal’s Ambassador to India, Deep Kumar Upadhyay, of soliciting votes for Nepali Congress party in Kapilbastu district in the run-up to local level elections.

Upadhyay had been in his home district from Wednesday to Saturday.

The chief of Nepali mission in New Delhi was in active politics of Nepali Congress in the district before getting the diplomatic assignment in April 2015.

The opposition parties have claimed that Upadhyay breached the election code of conduct as he participated in election campaign of Nepali Congress in Gorusinge and Banganga rural municipalities and Kapilbastu Municipality.

The Nepali Congress, however, has refused the charges claiming the envoy was in the district to participate in an interaction about Indian support in Kapilbastu’s development.

UML District In-Charge Khimlal Bhattarai says the District Election Office has already been informed about his activities.

The CPN-Maoist Centre and the Federal Socialist Forum-Nepal have also protested Upadhyay’s visit.
