Butwal, May 25

Deepak Pandey, a member of the CPN-Maoist Centre Kapilbastu district committee in the Lumbini province, has died during treatment on Monday night. He had sustained critical injuries after being shot at on Wednesday night.

A gang of three had opened fire at him along with an Indian citizen at Sadawa, Taulihawa-Jitpur road of the district. He was undergoing treatment at the Universal Medical College of Bhairahawa in the neighbouring Rupandehi district.

However, his situation did not improve and hence was airlifted to the Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital in Kathmandu last night. But, he died in the court of treatment in the capital, informs DSP Dharma Raj Bhandari, the Kapilbastu District Police Office spokesperson.

Police have arrested two persons on the charge of opening the fire and further investigation is underway.

Preliminary probe suggests the leader was attacked in an act of vengeance, DSP Bhandari says.
