A Nepal-India border management meeting has begun in Kathmandu. Survey Department officials from Nepal and India are taking part in the Survey Officers’ Committee meeting that began at Hotel Radisson in Kathmandu on Monday.

The officials will discuss management of Nepal-India border using GPS technology. According to a Survey Department source, the two sides will discuss violation of no-man’s land, maintenance of border pillars and border survey using GPS technology.

The SOC meeting will end on Tuesday. A source at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said meetings of boundary working group will take place on Wednesday and Thursday.

The two sides have constituted three technical teams for Nepal-India border management. They have already inspected different places. Team 1 has completed its task in border areas of Jhapa, Morang and Sunsari, Team 2 has completed its task in areas close to Thori and areas east of Thori while Team 3 is working at Bhairahawa and Nawalparasi districts save Susta.

The SOC meeting will review the tasks the technical teams have conducted. The BWG meeting will take place after that.

Susta and Kalapani disputes are not on the agenda of the BWG meeting. About five years ago, then Baburam Bhattarai government had decided to deploy technical teams for border management. This decision put pressure on India, resulting in the constitution of joint technical teams.
