Traffic police in Kathmandu say the number of non-licensed drivers is increasing in Kathmandu Valley despite stern measures adopted against them.

The Metropolitan Traffic Police Division says total 26,529 drivers including motorcyclists were booked for not possessing driving licence in last fiscal year 2016/17.

“Traffic police have launched a special campaign against such people,” according to Chief of the Division, Sarvendra Khanal.

The official informs that the growth in the number of non-licensed drivers is proportionate to the growth in number of vehicles in the city.

Traffic police charge a person Rs 1,000 if he/she is found driving without a licence.

Around 1.1 million vehicles ply the Kathmandu Valley currently, according to the Department of Transport Management.
