Kathmandu, September 25
The National Human Rights Commission is organising an international conference on rights of the migrant workers in the second week of November.
The constitutional human rights watchdog’s chairperson Anup Raj Sharma says the three-day conference will discuss various issues concerning rights of migrant workers across the world, in particular, Nepalis working overseas.
The government is funding the conference scheduled for November 12-14 and the commission will not accept funding from any foreign agency, he clarifies, adding, they, however, can provide expertise of resource persons for the event.
“This conference is organised not only for us but to discuss problems of migrant workers, most of which are global concerns,” he said speaking at a press meet in Kathmandu on Wednesday.
The commission’s member Sudip Pathak, who is coordinating the event, informed that around 125 delegates representing around 30 countries from across the world will attend the event. “We have already received confirmations from more than 20 countries,” he added.
National human rights bodies, ministries and departments, academic and research institutions, nongovernment organisations, trade unions, UN agencies and individual experts have been invited.
The NHRC officials claim that it is the biggest ever event on migrant workers’ rights organised in Nepal so far.
