New law will check authenticity of social media ads

Kathmandu, July 28

The government has proposed checking authenticity of advertisements posted on social media including Facebook, Twitter and YouTube.

A meeting of Development and Technology Committee of the House of Representatives, which is holding a clause-wise discussion on the Bill on Advertising Regulation, endorsed the provision about checking the advertisements’ authenticity.

Section 12 of the bill says no one is allowed to post ads without having official information. It bars mainstream media including online, print and broadcasting agencies from disseminating advertisements only after verifying the authenticity of the advertisement provider.

During the clause-wise discussion, lawmakers had demanded that social media be also included in the law’s jurisdiction, which the committee endorsed on Sunday morning.

Secretary at the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology Mahendra Man Gurung was also present at the meeting. He also said including social media could be considered.
