Minister for Foreign Affairs Prakash Sharan Mahat is taking his decision on using ‘Nepali’ instead of ‘Nepalese’ in all official documents and communications to the Cabinet for approval

New York, September 26

Minister for Foreign Affairs Prakash Sharan Mahat has said he will soon take his decision on using ‘Nepali’ instead of ‘Nepalese’ in all official documents and communications to the Council of Minister for approval.

Talking about his decision during a press conference that Nepal America Journalists’ Association had organised in New York, Mahat said his ministry has already sent circulars to all Nepali embassies, diplomatic missions and consulates about this decision.

Minister Mahat said: Before reaching this decision, I had talked to language experts. They also suggested I was right.

‘Nepali touches heart. Nepalese does not have the same effect’

He said ‘Nepali’ touches hearts, implying that the ‘Nepalese’ does not have the same effect.

Mahat said ‘Nepali’ will feature in new passports and ‘Nepalese’ will go. We are talking about switching from MRP to another kind of passport (e-passport), he said, adding that the new document will bear ‘Nepali’ instead of Nepalese.
