Foreign Minister Shishir Khanal attended the opening session of the high-level general debate of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly on Tuesday.
The high-level segment began at the UN headquarters in New York on Tuesday.
Khanal attended the session as part of the Nepali delegation, which included Foreign Secretary Amrit Bahadur Rai, Nepal’s Permanent Representative to the UN in New York Ambassador Lok Bahadur Thapa and Joint Secretary Krishna Prasad Dhakal, among other officials.
According to the Foreign Minister’s Secretariat, Khanal is scheduled to attend various high-level meetings, ministerial-level discussions and side events during the week-long high-level segment.
He will also hold bilateral meetings with his counterparts from various countries and senior UN officials.
Nepal is also organising a side event titled ‘Sagarmatha to Sea’ during the General Assembly.
The event will highlight the impacts of climate change on the Himalayan region and the challenges created by climate-induced disasters, according to officials.
Khanal is also scheduled to participate in ministerial-level meetings of the Least Developed Countries, Landlocked Developing Countries, Non-Aligned Movement, and the Group of 77 and China.
The high-level general debate of the 81st UN General Assembly will continue until September 28.
Prime Minister Balen Shah is scheduled to address the high-level general debate on September 24.
Shah left for New York on Tuesday evening to lead the high-level Nepali delegation to the UN General Assembly.
Foreign Minister Khanal, Prime Minister’s Chief Adviser Kumar Byanjankar, Foreign Secretary Rai and other members of the delegation are accompanying Shah.
