Sydney Metro staff to assist passengers in Nepali too

Sydney, November 1

Sydney Metro, which operates in Australia’s New South Wales state, has introduced a new arrangement to serve passengers from different language backgrounds more easily.

Metro staff will now wear badges on their uniforms showing the languages they speak.

According to Sydney Metro, staff will wear badges for 11 languages, including Nepali, Punjabi, Greek and Spanish, for the convenience of passengers.

The list also includes Auslan, the Australian sign language, to help passengers who are deaf, hard of hearing or unable to speak.

The language badges on uniforms will make it easier for passengers to identify staff who speak and understand their language. This is expected to reduce language barriers for passengers seeking information about train travel, destinations and metro services.

Passengers who need help while travelling on the metro can now approach staff wearing a badge for their language and get information directly.

The initiative is being seen as an important effort to give multilingual and multicultural communities easy, safe and barrier-free access to public transport.
