With the ruling coalition surviving a bid to topple it, thanks to a change of heart on the part of UCPN-Maoist Chair Prachanda, Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli told the Parliament on Thursday that politics of intrigues and conspiracies will not lead to national consensus. Honest efforts are a must for national consensus, Oli said, adding that he is forever ready for the same.
I have a sore throat, thanks to my repeated appeals for the formation of a unity government, he said, adding: Implementing the constitution is more important, fulfilling people’s expectations is more important, post-quake reconstruction is more important than mere parliamentary practice. And an understanding is a must for the same.
After managing to save his job, PM Oli said there were efforts to destabilise the country by targeting the law and order situation. He said there’s no reason to topple this government. Oli asked all concerned to think seriously before talking about formation of a national unity government, pointing that people are watching politicians and they know who is right and who is not.
National consensus should be in the interest of the country, he said, adding: Political parties should reach an understanding on post-quake reconstruction, economic development and people’s welfare. Oli asked all not to use national consensus as a means to bring political instability in the country.
He appealed all parties, including the main opposition Nepali Congress, to come for open discussions for the resolution of crises facing the country. Oli said: Let’s discuss issues, let’s arrive at something that benefits the country. I am ready for this.
Oli said: Calling for national consensus and calling for a strong opposition at the same time is quite contrasting.
At a time when Madhesh-centric parties are threatening to reject the constitution promulgated through a populary-elected Constituent Assembly, PM Oli said: The constitution can be amended, but cannot be rewritten. He asked parties concerned not to do politics over petty issues. He said drafting of laws is underway for implementation of the constitution.
