Nepal elections: 32 districts go to polls today

Nepal is holding the first phase of provincial and federal parliamentary elections on Sunday. Voting will be held in 32 districts of mountainous and high hilly regions today.

Over three million voters will cast their ballots to elect 37 federal House of Representatives members and 74 provincial lawmakers. Total 702 candidates are in the fray.

Likewise, they will also cast ballots to elect federal and provincial lawmakers under the proportional representation category.

The Election Commission says voting has begun at 7 am and will conclude at 5 in the afternoon.

Total 2,919 voting stations and 4,465 voting centres have been set up for three million and 191,945 votes.

Other 45 districts will hold the polls in the second phase on December 7. Total 128 House of Representatives members and 256 provincial parliamentarians will be selected in the second phase. Likewise, the voters will cast votes under proportional representation candidates too.

Nepal’s House of Representatives has 275 members, including 165 from first-past-the-post system and 110 from the proportional representation.
