Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance, Krishna Bahadur Mahara, left for China on Monday in the capacity of Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal Prachanda’s special emissary.

Talking to the media at Tribhuvan International Airport before his departure to China, Mahara said his visit aims to expand Nepal-China relations further.

During his two-day visit, Mahara will try to convince Chinese political leadership on these points.

One: There have been widespread comments on India’s role in the formation of the Prachanda-led government. Nonetheless, through this visit, the government of Nepal wants to further strengthen relations between Nepal and China. Prachanda wants Chinese support and goodwill for his government. Mahara has said that the objective of this visit is to ensure Chinese support for this government.

Two: The Prachanda-led government wants to assure that it will implement all deals that the previous (KP Oli-led) government signed with China. During the visit of then Prime Minister KP Oli, Nepal and China had reached a 14-point understanding.

After toppling of the Oli government, people in Nepal wonder whether those deals, which are in the interest of Nepal, will remain on paper. Then PM Oli and other UML leaders suspect that the Prachanda government may not bother to implement the deals.

China also wants to make sure that change in government will not affect implementation of those deals. Through his emissary, PM Prachanda will try to assure China that he is committed to implementing the deals.

Mahara said: We will give continuity to ‘good aspects’ of Nepal-China agreements and expect assistance from China to strengthen bilateral relations further.

Three: Nepal wants to finalise the visit of China’s Presidnet Xi Jinping. President Xi is likely to visit Nepal in October. Nepal does not want the change in government to affect the visit. Through Mahara, PM Prachanda is extending invitation to Chinese leaders, including President Xi, to visit Nepal.

Before leaving for China, Mahara said his government expects high-level leaders from China to visit Nepal. Mahara said he will extend the invite during his stay in China.
