Nepal can export power from April 2019: Ghising

Kathmandu, April 4

Nepal Electricity Authority Managing Director Kulman Ghising says Nepal can start exporting power to neighbouring countries as early as April 2019.

Ghising says Nepal will have excess power during the rainy season after 456 MW Tamakoshi hydropower project comes into operation in November 2018.

The NEA chief said after Chameliya and Kulekhani III come into operation by the end of this fiscal, Nepal will cut down on power imports from India. “After Tamakoshi comes into operation, we will have to start selling power within six months,” he added.

Ghising said the NEA is now working on a plan to reduce powercuts for manufacturing units. “The dry season is now behind us, we no longer need to worry about power cuts,” he said.

“By the time Tamakoshi is read, we would have already bought more than 200 MW opower from independent producers,” Ghising explained.
