NCP secretariat meeting postponed again

The ruling Nepal Communist Party holds its secretariat meeting to discuss the MCC deal, also inviting Pradeep Gyawali, Bhim Rawal, and Yuba Raj Khatiwada, in June 2020.

Kathmandu, June 14

The secretariat meeting of the ruling Nepal Communist Party has been postponed again.

The meeting was called for 4 pm today to discuss and decide whether the party should urge the government to forward the controversial Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) deal signed between the governments of Nepal and the United States. Therefore, two members of the party’s MCC task force–Bhim Rawal and Pradeep Gyawali–and Finance Minister Yubaraj Khatiwada had also been invited.

It has not been clear why the meeting was postponed.

The three-year-old deal has not been implemented yet as the Federal Parliament has not endorsed it. The ruling party is dived over the issue. Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli wants to endorse it as soon as possible, but he is reportedly thinking of not putting pressure for its endorsement. Many others in the party have urged for a revision before the endorsement citing some of the provisions are against national interest.

Meanwhile, a task force formed by the party has also suggested that the deal should not be endorsed without revision. The report of the task force has not been officially discussed in the party.
