Oli likely to accept verdict of majority of party leaders on MCC

Kathmandu, June 9

Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has hinted that he will not put pressure on the secretariat of his Nepal Community Party to decide in favour of the controversial Millennium Challenge Corporation deal, sources claim.

Fearing that putting pressure on the party over this controversial deal could not benefit him, he would agree on what the majority of the members in the secretariat decide, sources close to the prime minister say. The secretariat meeting scheduled for this afternoon will discuss whether to forward the deal to Parliament seeking endorsement.

However, he would request the secretariat to make a concrete decision about whether to endorse the deal, without mentioning which side he would belong to, it has been learned.

The three-year-old deal has not been implemented yet as the Federal Parliament has not endorsed it. The ruling party is dived over the issue. Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli wants to endorse it as soon as possible whereas others including the party’s executive chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal have urged for a revision before the endorsement citing some of the provisions are against national interest.

Meanwhile, a task force formed by the party has also suggested that the deal should not be endorsed without revision. The report of the task force has not been officially discussed in the party.
