The Nepali Communist Party’s (NCP) previously set schedule for its conventions has been disrupted. Party spokesperson Prakash Jwala said the schedule was affected due to the situation following the Rasuwa flood.
“Earlier, the party’s Central Coordination Committee had drawn up a timeline for the conventions and general convention,” he said. “But because of the devastating flood that hit Rasuwa on August 26 and related factors, the planned schedule couldn’t be carried out.”
He said the party now needs to discuss the matter and set a new schedule. A meeting of the Central Coordination Committee held last April had decided to hold the general convention in Kathmandu from December 26 to 30.
That plan had included conducting a membership renewal and new membership drive through the end of June and July.
The schedule called for ward-level conventions to be completed by August 30, municipal-level conventions from September 1 through the end of the month, district-level conventions by the second week of October, and provincial conventions by November 1.
However, spokesperson Jwala said that because conventions and the general convention could not proceed according to that schedule, the party now needs to discuss the matter and come up with a new one.
To hold this discussion, the NCP has called a meeting of its Central Coordination Committee.
Jwala said the meeting has been called for 1 pm Tuesday at the party’s central office in Parisdanda.
“The Central Coordination Committee meeting will discuss the general convention and the conventions, as well as the matter of membership renewal,” he said.
According to party leaders, lower-level committees have complained that although the centre made the general convention schedule public, the procedures needed to actually hold the conventions were not in place, causing problems.
The upcoming Tuesday meeting will also discuss bringing in convention procedures. Leaders say preparations are underway to introduce a new schedule that would, if possible, still allow the general convention to take place in November-December.
