Kathmandu, June 14
The ruling Nepal Communist Party has called a meeting of the party secretariat for this afternoon.
The meeting will take place at 4 pm at the prime minister’s official residence in Baluwatar, according to party sources.
The meeting has been called to decide whether the party should urge the government to forward the controversial Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) deal signed between the governments of Nepal and the United States. Therefore, two members of the party’s MCC task force–Bhim Rawal and Pradeep Gyawali–and Finance Minister Yubaraj Khatiwada have also been invited.
The three-year-old deal has not been implemented yet as the Federal Parliament has not endorsed it. The ruling party is dived over the issue. Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli wants to endorse it as soon as possible, but he is reportedly thinking of not putting pressure for its endorsement. Many others in the party have urged for a revision before the endorsement citing some of the provisions are against national interest.
Meanwhile, a task force formed by the party has also suggested that the deal should not be endorsed without revision. The report of the task force has not been officially discussed in the party.
