Kathmandu, January 3
The Election Commission, in a bid to solve the issue about the legitimacy of the ruling Nepal Communist Party, has written separate letters to Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli and Pushpa Kamal Dahal.
The constitutional body, after going through applications and documents submitted by both sides, has written back to both the Oli-led and Dahal-led factions. The commission has given the Dahal-led faction a week to respond. However, the Oli-led faction has not been asked to do the same.
In the letter, the commission has stated that the issue could be solved according to Sections 43 and 44 of Chapter 9 of the Political Parties Act, 2017. The chapter gives the commission the authority to resolve any dispute between two or more parties about their name, election symbols and other details.
This comes after both Oli-led and Dahal-led factions submitted signatures of central committee members claiming their legitimacy in December 2020.
The Dahal-led faction, citing majority, had claimed the party name and sign while PM Oli had only informed the commission about the expansion of the central committee and amendment of the party statute.
The commission has said that documents received from both factions did not comply with Chapter 9 of the Political Parties Act, 2017. They have informed that the dispute will be settled according to the chapter.
