UML says Oli should not be singled out for election defeat

Oli - UML

Kathmandu, October 6

The CPN-UML has concluded that its defeat in the March 5 election should not be viewed as a personal failure of party Chairman KP Sharma Oli.

In the political document issued after the party’s third Central Committee meeting, the UML said the election defeat should be analysed in the context of the overall political and organisational situation.

“The defeat was not only the result of external attacks. It was also a result of our internal weaknesses. But the defeat is not the personal failure of the chairman,” the document states.

According to the document, the election result was a combined outcome of the party’s organisational weaknesses, the prevailing public mood, external environment, digital attacks and the overall electoral situation.

Oli has acknowledged responsibility for his share of the defeat but has maintained that he will not step down as party chairman.

“As chairman, I accept the responsibility that falls on my part. But I also say this — this is not the time to run away, nor is it the time to remain caught up in blame games,” Oli said in the document.

The 26-page political document also includes Oli’s remarks and various decisions taken by the Central Committee, including decisions on nominations.
