Nepal wins the 100th gold medal in SAG history

By Wednesday evening, Nepal won 29 gold medals in this edition of South Asian Games. Whereas the country needs just three more medals to reach the highest point of success in SAG history (Nepal had won 32 gold medals in the eighth SAG), Wednesday became a historic day due to another reason. Nepal won its 100th gold medal in the SAG history via Saksham Karki on Wednesday. Records show that Nepal had won 71 gold medals in the past 12 editions of the regional sports event.

It was the first international gold medal for karateka Karki.

India silent over Nepal’s border concern

Foreign Affairs Minister Pradeep Kumar Gyawali has complained that India was silent about a diplomatic note the government had sent to the New Delhi government about the recently surfaced border dispute in Kalapani.

It has been three weeks since the letter was dispatched, but the government has not received any reply yet, Gyawali told a group of activists during a meeting in Singhadarbar yesterday.

“Though there is not any time limit set for the response, a response is expected in such cases,” a ministry source says.

Nepali shooters deprived of rifles

Nepali participants of shooting events under the ongoing South Asian Games have complained that they were deprived of rifles and pistols needed for the games. “Our situation is like that of a student who has completed all preparations for an exam, but yet to study the course,” a shooter says.

National Sports Council had assured that the rifles would be made available before the games’ opening, but could not keep the words. Hence, the players participated in various competitions with their 20-year-old apparatuses yesterday.

DSP served arrest warrant

The Kathmandu District Court recently issued an arrest warrant on Nepal Police DSP Kumud Dhungel after a police investigation found that he was frequently contacting a burglary suspect, Bikas Shrestha. After the probe, the police headquarters had suspended him in May this year till the conclusion of the case.

Meanwhile, the Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority has also launched an investigation into Dhungel.

Protesting medical students boycott exams

MBBS, BDS and B Sc Nursing students of National Medical College, Chitwan Medical College, Janaki Medical College and Universal College of Medical Sciences have announced to boycott the first-year final exams. The exams are beginning Thursday.

The students have been protesting for the past few months demanding that the colleges return the fees they collected from the students in addition to the ones approved by the government.

Tourism minister tells envoys not to go home during Christmas-New Year holidays

Minister for Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation Yogesh Bhattarai has requested foreign ambassadors working in Nepal to stay within the country even during the Christmas and New Year holidays. Minister Bhattarai hopes that the ambassadors celebrating the big festivals in Nepal will help their host country promote its ambitious Visit Nepal Year 2020 campaign.

In a meeting with the diplomats in Kathmandu on Wednesday, the minister also appealed to them to support the campaign.
