Rastriya Janata Party leader Mahantha Thakur has complained that he never got a chance to be called a Nepali, just because he was born in the Madhesh region.

Taking part in the ongoing discussion on the government’s annual policy and programme in the House of Representatives on Monday, Thakur claimed many Nepali people had a mindset that all people in the region came from India.

Recent controversies about the proposed citizenship law is also a result of that mindset, he added.

He commented that a group of people always thought that many Indian people were awaiting for the Nepali citizenship in line.

“If there are Indians in the line, who is sitting in the chair to provide them certificates? Who are people at the Ministry of Home Affairs,” an emotional Thakur questioned, “Do you think there are Indians too?”

“We have been facing the pain of being called foreigners at our own home. Please, we have to get away from such old mindset.”

Thakur was of the view that those who talked about equality also had the biased mindset.

In another context, the leader said federalism and republicanism were also restricted to papers till date.
