The team recovering the bodies of late Nepali mountaineer Nirmal Purja and other climbers who died in the avalanche on Pakistan’s Broad Peak is preparing to descend to Camp 1 today.
According to the ground rescue team, the first phase of the operation involves bringing the bodies of those who lost their lives in the avalanche down to Camp 1. They are then expected to be moved to the Japanese Camp on Monday.
The ground team said that if weather and mountain conditions remain favourable, helicopters will be able to transport both the recovery team and the bodies from the Japanese Camp to a safer location.
The recovery team said every effort is being made to retrieve the bodies safely and repatriate them to their home countries with dignity.
Purja and nine other climbers had gone missing after the avalanche. Of the 10 victims, six were Nepali mountaineers. Purja’s death was officially confirmed only on Saturday.
The avalanche struck Broad Peak, the 8,047-metre mountain in Pakistan’s Karakoram, around midday on Thursday (July 30). Ten climbers, including six Nepalis, were caught in the avalanche. Purja was leading the expedition.
