Lawmakers want govt to stop giving festival allowance to pensioners

A meeting of State Affairs and Good Governance Committee in Kathmandu, on Monday, June 10, 2019.

Kathmandu, July 7

Members of Parliament have demanded that the government stop providing festival allowance equal to one month’s pension amount to retired government staff enjoying the lifetime pension facility.

Participating in a discussion on the Civil Service Bill at the State Affairs and Good Governance Committee of Parliament on Sunday, many lawmakers said the allowance was not necessary though a similar facility would be necessary for currently working staff.

Former home minister and ruling Nepal Communist Party leader Janardan Sharma said the need of farmers would be more important than the need of retired staff in this regard.

Another leader Pampha Bhusal said discontinuing the system would be valid from the economic perspective.

Likewise, Nepali Congress leader Devendra Raj Kandel said senior citizens should be provided with the allowance if the pensioners continued to received that.

Meanwhile, they demanded that the government stop providing medical allowance to all the staff including those who are not sick.
