Kathmandu, April 15

The State Affairs and Good Governance Committee in the House of Representatives has directed the government to keep unidentified human bodies safe for 20 years whenever there is a suspicion of a serious crime.

The committee issued a directive during its meeting held in Kathmandu on Thursday. Home Minister Ram Bahadur Thapa and Home Secretary Maheshwar Neupane had also attended the meeting.

During the meeting, Secretary Neupane said the government had already prepared a draft about the procedure to manage unidentified corpses but was waiting for approval of the Ministry of Finance as it would also involve some costs.

Meanwhile, the committee also directed the government to launch a website to publish details of unidentified bodies along with their photographs. Likewise, the government has been told to share information on social media also.

There are 1,189 unidentified human bodies in the country, according to the ministry.
