Kathmandu, December 11

The government has decided to promote Nepal Police DIG Bishwa Raj Pokharel to the position of additional inspector-general (AIG) of Nepal Police.

Pokharel’s promotion means he will be the sole contender for the chief of Nepal Police when incumbent Shailesh Thapa Kshetri retires in May 2022

The decision comes just a day after the State Affairs and Good Governance Committee in Parliament had directed the government not to implement the recommendation for Pokharel’s promotion suspecting he was being promoted due to political pressure.

Although Home Minister Ram Bahadur Thapa had said he would convey the House panel’s directive to the concerned authority, the cabinet meeting also attended by Thapa promoted him.

Last month, the cabinet had amended the police organogram increasing the number of AIG positions to four. As reported, Deputy Prime Minister Ishwar Pokharel had interfered into the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Home Affairs to make the decision so that his relative Bishwa Raj Pokharel could take that role.
