Mr mayor’s 100 days in office: Haven’t lost hopes despite setbacks

Kathmandu Metropolitan City’s Mayor Bidya Sundar Shakya

Kathmandu, September 7

Amidst criticisms that the elected people’s representatives in Kathmandu Metropolitan City failed to meet citizens’ expectations as 100 days have been passed since their election, Mayor Bidya Sundar Shakya says he is on track to implement various plans that he had introduced.

He has said the capital city will also launch the much-ambitious monorail within next two years.

“Many proposals have been filed to operate monorail. As the metropolis does not have an expert team, I have been unable to choose which proposals are right. But, we will discuss with experts soon,” he says.

Meanwhile, Shakya accepts that he could not deliver as expected in the first 100 days and some criticisms are valid.

“I accept that I could not do as much as I had said. But it is not true that I did nothing,” he says in an interview with Onlinekhabar, “We will make public what we did, what we could not and what we are doing.”

As his contender Kishore Thapa yesterday commented that the new mayor ‘wasted’ three months to receive felicitations and congratulations, Shakya accepts the charge that such formal programmes took more time than necessary.

“There were many people who helped us in elections. They invited us, be it for five minutes only. But, even if you go for five minutes, the programmes last as long as one hour. Such programmes also disturbed us.”

“But we have done many things,” he says, “We removed 995 tonnes of waste under Clean the City campaign. There were many programmes for elderly citizens. We have released Rs 50 million for Sajha Bus to bring in big buses. We have moved the process to purchase broomers to clean roads.”

“I could not do as much as I had planned,” he says, “But, I am not hopeless. I still have a will to implement the plans.”
